I am planning to return to work (NHS) after my maternity leave finishes but am also thinking of starting my own buisness which i may be able to get off the ground before i am due to return to my employer.
Can i work self employed whilst receiving SMP? I live in the UK.
Anyone have any experience of this?

In Australia you are only restricted by your employment contract and only if it is in the same field as your job. You also have to declare all your income if you are on a pension and for tax purpses. I would assume the UK is very similar.
