30 Jul 2009 / 3 Comments / in Pregnancy Advice/by Baby Talk

What benefits can you get if you want to continue on maternity after 39 weeks until week 52? I am a single mum and want to take the full 52 weeks but don’t know how i would be able to do what i am in titled to do. Anyone been in the same situation or has taken th full 52 weeks maternity leave?

You wouldn’t be entitled to anything other than your normal amount of tax credits and child benefit.

Child tax credits and child benefit, you might however be able to claim income support for the last 13 weeks of your maternity leave, you should speak to a citizens advice advisor and they’ll tell you exactly what you can and can’t claim as i know the jobcentre advisors like to tell porkies so you don’t claim.

In Canada, you’re entitled to sick leave of up to 15 weeks before the birth. Once the baby is born, you get 15 weeks maternity leave, then 35 weeks parental benefits. The maternity is just for you, and you can’t work while you’re on it. The parental can be split between you and the father, or you can take it all, and you can work to earn 25% of what you get in maternity EI benefits. So, the total you get from the birth is 50 weeks. You can get up to 65 weeks including sickness – if your doctor signs off on it. http://www.servicecanada.gc.ca/eng/sc/ei…
