Sex during Pregnancy

This topic seems to get a lot more attention than it needs to get.  Unless you have a high risk pregnancy sex is safe both for you and your baby.  You may find that some positions are uncomfortable for you but they are not harmful to your baby.  Your baby is protected by amniotic fluid and by your own abdomen.  It is also safe to have an orgasm while pregnant.  Contrary to the myths that are out there this will not cause you to go into labor.  I hope this helps you feel a little more at ease about your pregnancy.

Buying Baby Bedding

When you find out that you are expecting a new bundle of joy the first thing your mind wonders to is how to make them as comfortable as possible.  Most new moms spend the next nine months shopping, planning and decorating their nursery so that it is just right for their baby to get the rest that they need.  A baby that is able to sleep properly will be a much happier child and we all want that.

You should do your research before you buy the first cute baby bedding you see.  You want the sheet to fit snuggly over a firm mattress.  There is no need for a baby blanket, comforter or pillows at this point, not to mention that they are an added risk for suffication.  All the fabrics that come into contact with your baby should be soft, warm and be able to stand up to many washings.  At this point you must decide if you want to have custom baby bedding made or go with a Pre-made baby bedding set.

Custom made baby bedding can be great but it can also be a nightmare.  The great thing about it is you get to decide what material will be used, the exact size and layout. You are totally in control of what your baby bedding will look like.  The problem is the same as the benefits.  You have to find the material, decide on a layout and find someone that can put it all together the way you invision it in your head.  To most people custom baby bedding sounds great until they are in the middle of it and discover it takes a bit more work and planning.  For some mothers who are very creative though, it is the perfect option.

If you decide to go with the pre-made baby bedding rout you just need to start shopping.  No matter what rout you do take you are going to want to decide on your bedding first and get it before you start decorating the rest of your nursery.  If you go at it the other way and try to find a bedding for a theme and a color that you have already decorated your nursery in you may find yourself looking for a very long time or having a baby bedding set that does not quite match the paint job on your nursery walls.

Having a perfect nursery is important for a new mom and a new baby.  You want to have many happy memories in the room with your child.  You don’t want to be sitting in it half done and rocking a new born.  You have nine months to plan.  Make them count and make them joyful as your new baby will make you joyful.

Do You Hate Drinking Milk?

So are you getting enough calcium while you are pregnant or nursing?  I know that I don’t because I hate drinking milk. I think I was “forced” into drinking so much milk as a kid, I lost my taste for it.  I love it in coffee or with chocolate. LOL.  So what do I do when I’m pregnant or nursing?  I use a liquid calcium supplement my midmife suggested to me.  It’s called Liguid Calcium Magnesium with Botonicals.  This also helps with indigestion and gas.  There are also many delicious calcium rich foods out there for you to enjoy.

Here are just a few:

  • Broccli and kale
  • Soy Milk
  • Almonds and figs
  • Sesame seeds and tahini
  • Low or nonfat cottage cheese
  • Low fat or nonfat plain yogurt or fat free frozen yogurt
  • 3-4 ounces of canned mackerel, salmon or sardines with bones
  • Tofu

Calcium is important to the health of your baby and for us Mom’s too.  Calcium heps in the development of muscle, heart and nerves in a developing baby.  You can also drink calcium-fortified juices.  I drink lots of orange juice.

Remember you also need to get enough iron.  Although iron is traditionally found in liver, duck and beef, you can also turn to these other sources rich in iron.

  • Cooked oysters
  • Sardines
  • Artichokes
  • Potatoes
  • Pumpkin
  • Spinach
  • Green peas
  • Chickpeas, lentils, kidney beans, lima beans and soybeans
  • Tofu

Sleeping on your back while pregnant.

You have heard it said over and over again that pregnant women should not sleep on their backs.  The reason for this fear is people say that the uterus can compress the large vein called the vena cava which supplies the baby with blood.

The problem with this theory is that the uterus is not large enough to compress this vein until your third trimester.  Even then if you did fall asleep on your back you would wake up short of breath and light headed.  This is your body telling you to get off your back.  So don’t stress.  If you are more comfortable sleeping on your back go ahead your body will let you know when to turn over.

Airline Travel

The College of Obstetricians and Gynecologist say that you are safe to fly into the 36th week of your pregnancy.  The only reason that they don’t recommend flying beyond that is they don’t want you to go into labor on the plan where getting you to medical attention would be difficult.

Pregnant ladies are more prone to blood clots and doctors due recommend that you get up and walk around every 2-3 hours if you are on a long flight.  This would be true if you were in a long car ride or just sitting around the house though.

Don’t worry about the metal detector either.  It is not actually hitting your body with radiation like a doctors X-ray machine.   It is actually a low intensity magnetic field that’s absolutely harmless for you and your little one.

So take that last get away trip to Maui before your little bundle of joy arrives.
